Overview

Se considera meningitis aséptica cualquier meningitis cuya causa no se conoce después de la evaluación inicial, de las habituales tinciones y del cultivo del líquido cefalorraquídeo, aunque la causa más frecuente son los virus. Las meningitis purulentas son meningitis agudas producidas por bacterias piógenas. Otro tipo de meningitis son las causadas por hongos y parásitos, que suelen darse sobre todo en pacientes inmunodeprimidos. Las meningitis no infecciosas pueden ser causada por diferentes procesos: fármacos, tumores primarios o secundarios del SNC, afectación neurológica de enfermedades sistémicas o enfermedades de afectación exclusivamente neurológica. En cuanto a las encefalitis viral, su causa principal es el virus herpes simple tipo 1 y con menor frecuencia otros virus, otros patógenos no virales y algunos procesos no infecciosos. En cuanto a las enfermedades por espiroquetas, en esta monografía se trata fundamentalmente de la borreliosis de Lyme y de la neurosífilis.
Las infecciones de la médula espinal resultan relativamente infrecuentes; sin embargo, por sus implicaciones pronósticas requieren un diagnóstico y un tratamiento precoz. También se expone la tuberculosis del SNC.
